Emsworth Primary School
– Emsworth, Hampshire
In response to the increased housing in the surrounding area, Emsworth Primary School needed to expand their education facilities with two new classrooms, while also refurbishing four large classrooms to bring them up to modern standards.
Hampshire County Council Architects led the project in the early stages creating the concept design and gaining planning permission, and remained the School’s representative during the project.
The project was tendered on a Design and Build contract and Axis Architecture was employed in collaboration with the main contractor, Brymor, to gain Building Regulation approval, provide detailed construction drawings, and attend site during construction. Axis and Brymor worked to a very tight budget and timescale to deliver the project.
Attention to detail and careful material selection was a key priority due to the primary school environment and all parties are very happy with the end result. The steel framed building with external insulated render provides a robust structure that can remain largely independent of the 1970s modular steel construction system. Powder coated aluminium glazing and doors provide a long lasting solution to the high usage they will be expected to cope with. Careful attention was also paid to elements that the primary school children would be aware of, such as the boat shaped glazing manifestations that respond to the maritime context of Emsworth.
Axis was very happy to work closely with both Brymor and Hampshire County Council for this project.
