Axis Architecture gained planning approval for a major flatted development and extension to a convenience store in Southsea.
The brief was complex as the site borders a conservation zone and consequently, although the design is contemporary it draws on a palate of materials which are reflected in the adjacent conservation area.
16 no. one and two bed flats form a three storey extension above this existing structure and also allow the convenience store to be expanded on the ground floor.
In order to compliment the vernacular of the conservation area the top floor is set back from the main façade and from the ground it will not be possible to see the top floor. This will reduce the visual mass of the building and creates a sensitive relationship between the new proposals and the two storey properties opposite. This reduction on the top floor also affords the opportunity to provide terrace space for each top floor flat.
The project was shelved during 2008 due to the recession. Since then the site has been subdivided and developed separately by others.
