About The Book

The construction industry thrives on collaboration, but too often, it is mired in assumptions, miscommunication, and blame. In Beyond the Blame Game: Breaking the Cycle of Assumption, Liability and Blame Under CDM 2015, RIBA Principal Designer Giordana brings a unique, hands-on perspective for Principal Contractors, helping them understand their legal responsibilities, navigate complex projects, and manage risk effectively.

This book provides clear guidance on the roles and responsibilities of duty holders, how to foster a collaborative culture, and practical steps for compliance with CDM 2015. Through case studies, actionable checklists, and lessons drawn from prosecutions and fines, contractors will learn how early engagement, structured risk conversations, and effective communication can prevent problems before they escalate.

Readers will discover how to work confidently with a Principal Designer, manage the design team, maintain thorough documentation, and anticipate risks – reducing liability while promoting efficiency, trust, and teamwork.

Whether you are a seasoned contractor or taking on your first multi-contractor project, Beyond the Blame Game is an indispensable guide to protecting your business, reducing risk, and delivering projects safely and successfully.

About The Author

Giordana Burns BA(Hons Arch), MA(Arch), PhD, RIBA is a Director of Axis Architecture Ltd and a registered RIBA Principal Designer. Born and raised in Italy, Giordana grew up immersed in architecture, inspired by her grandfather, who designed and built much of the historic town of Formia, as well as notable projects in Naples and Palermo.

She began her architectural studies at the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II before completing her qualification in London at Greenwich University. Over the past 17 years, Giordana has built extensive experience across domestic and commercial projects, working in both public and private sectors. Her expertise spans architecture, interior design, contract administration, project management, principal designer responsibilities, and regulatory compliance, with a particular focus on CDM 2015 and Principal Contractor support.

Giordana has contributed to high-profile projects, including the Victorinox flagship store on New Bond Street, and has led Axis Architecture through a transition from traditional to progressive, innovative, and sustainable design practices. Her approach combines Italian heritage in art and design with cutting-edge architecture, and she is particularly inspired by Antoni Gaudí, the architect who literally sculpted his buildings into life.

Outside work, Giordana keeps herself busy, as a practising Buddhist, a mother of two, and an avid lover of pottery and water sports. You’ll often find her paddle-boarding, kayaking, or sailing along the Solent and Hampshire coastline, or in her workshop throwing clay. She also volunteers her time to community and educational initiatives, reflecting her commitment to supporting others in the construction and design industry.

We strive to provide an efficient and valuable service to all our clients and our management processes underpin the delivery of all our services.
