Design Decisions

The scale of the buildings and the palette of materials was an important driving principle, both contextually and economically. It was considered important to respect the residential scale and context of the surrounding area, whilst providing buildings of a quality and individuality to enrich the urban fabric.

The larger unit stands alone to the east of the site, facing north presenting its entrance to those entering the complex. The relatively shallow pitched and hipped roof reduces the visual mass of the building, whilst the large overhanging eaves and splayed corners provide a contrast of elements and shadow.

The three smaller units are arranged laterally along the southern boundary, their entrances and stepped roof producing a visual rhythm. This smaller volume building is sensitive to the proximity of the residential properties beyond the boundary to the west.
