Sample of Waterfront Project

Blue Star Cafe

Following on from a successful water front kiosk serving ice-creams and drinks, the owner wished to expand the business in to a large café but located at the waters edge. As lead consultant, Axis were tasked with providing the working drawing package.

Introduction

The client had run a small cafe from the foreshore for many years and his decision to
expand required the demolition of the small café and to replace it with a building that
could provide a larger modern kitchen, indoor seating, toilet facilities and a roof
terrace.

Different materials and colours are used across the building in order to help break up
the mass of the building. This provides a changing appearance depending on where
the building is viewed from and the colours were chosen to complement the
surrounding buildings and its nautical context. Its position within a conservation area
resulted in some challenging planning conditions to overcome, but by working closely
with the Client, Council and Conservation Officer, solutions were found to enable the
building to be opened on-time for the summer season.

The Construction Phase

The basic planning drawings were converted into a comprehensive and detailed 3D
computer model using Autodesk Revit, which enabled the client to see exactly what
could be achieved when the necessary structural elements were taken into account.
Being able to build a virtual 3D model enabled us to ensure that the structural
elements could fit into the very tight zones that had been allowed for at the planning
stage and to ensure the on-site construction went smoothly.
Axis Architecture is proud to have been involved in this project, helping to create a
building that has become a notable landmark on the Hamble-le-Rice foreshore.
