Sample of Special Education Project
New Barn School
Axis Architecture was commissioned to design the renovation work for the 250-year-
old barn. Hillcrest Children’s Services wanted to propose changing the use of the
building from offices B1 to school D1. The historic building is situated in a rural
location near Newbury.
Furthermore, the project was designed for a special need school, to host kids from 8
to 16 years old. Children hosted in placement are often vulnerable and need support
emotionally. Axis was delighted to offer a full service supporting vulnerable children
and providing a comfortable and well-designed environment to nurture young people.
The Proposal
It was imperative that we designed the interior and exterior playground in strict accordance with the relevant regulations and with further guidance and consideration to Special Needs. As is the case with most old barn conversions this project was not
without its hurdles: one of the largest maternity bat roosts in the UK found in a roof was discovered here and appropriate provision and licenses were put in place to allow continuation of works.
Axis applied for a change of use of this converted barn building from A2 Professional Services to D1 Special Needs School. The application was approved with some conditions that were quickly discharged. The project started on site and completed successfully within a few months.
