I hate Architects
5 Reasons Why You Don't:
Please let us share our views on some common misconceptions about Architects and working with them (us). To do so, we are addressing the typical perceptions associated with Architects and their role in the project.
1. They are only good at pretty images
It takes 8 years of study and training to become an Architect in the UK. For instance, in many European countries, an Architectural Student must study many disciplines, such as physics and advanced math. In many Countries, training to become an Architect has a lot in common with the Structural Engineer’s training. The difference is that an Architect needs to be able to assist a client from concept (with lots of pretty pictures, only well thought through and bespoke to the brief and context) all the way to construction and handover, via getting all the permissions and producing technical drawings.
Not all Architects are good at all stages of the project, but all of them must train throughout their whole career, improving and learning, if they want to retain the title of Architect.
2. It's just a click of a button
Most Architects nowadays work with a 3D software. In a way we build the project as we draw it, making the beginning of the project the hardest and most time consuming. Once the project has been designed in 3D, it is true that a lot of information can easily be gathered, such as creating a section or producing 3D sketches. However, working in 3D is extremely difficult and takes a lot of training to construct the 3D model perfectly. In reality, the information the software produces with a click of a button, still needs a lot of refining and adjusting, which usually translates into many hours of work.
3. Architects are unaffordable

Furthermore, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) recommends Architects’ fees to be approximately 6% of the construction budget. Without a doubt, working with a professional architect is the best way to get the best value of your money, saving you costs in the long run: reliable architects will guide customers on cost-effective solutions for the project by designing a plan to meet your needs. The value does not stop on the construction costs; architects are likely to come up with a design that will lead to a building with lower energy costs and maintenance for years to come.
4. Only Big Projects Require Architects
While employing an Architect for your project is not compulsory, it needs to be said that every building project requires a thoughtful design. Involving an architect is the best way to achieve the best possible results for your project. Some small projects might have intricacies and complications that other projects might not have. Regardless of your construction budget, you need an architect to help you meet building codes and your requirements. Working with an architect eliminates stress, since these professionals are trained to give you a realistic picture during construction.
5. Bottom Line
Any building project is a significant investment; it requires thoughtful planning and careful execution. Working with a professional architect ensures your project idea is brought to life in the most efficient and cost-effective way. Architects are affordable, listen to customer requirements, and can handle a variety of projects. Furthermore, Architects help you avoid costly mistakes during construction by anticipating them and / or offering solutions.
We hope by now you have dispelled any of the above misconceptions you had about working with architects. Choose your Architect carefully, based on previous experience and make sure he or she is a RIBA member. Once your Architect is on board, you can be rest assured that you have taken the best steps towards a successful building project that meets or even exceeds expectations.
